XMR swaps need separate memo support for exchange payouts
An XMR swap can reach memo-required exchange accounts only when its payout flow carries the destination memo; the Monero deposit and recipient tag serve different networks.

A Monero-to-XRP swap can credit an exchange account that requires a destination tag only if the payout includes that tag with the XRP address; the XMR transfer does not carry it. The same separation applies to memo-required destinations on other networks: the swap service must collect and attach the destination’s memo when it sends the output asset.
Why does a destination require a memo or tag?
Exchanges often use one blockchain address for many customers and rely on a memo or tag to route each deposit to the right account. XRP Ledger calls this field a destination tag; Stellar uses memos. The receiving platform defines what the value means, so a tag for one customer cannot be inferred from the address alone.
That differs from Monero’s own payment details. Monero supports integrated addresses that encode a compact payment ID, but that information belongs to the Monero side of a transaction. A guide to how an XMR bridge moves Monero into other assets explains the conversion path; the separate payout memo is a field the service must handle for the destination network.
How should an XMR bridge handle the payout?
A swap has two distinct legs: the user sends XMR to a deposit address, then the service sends the chosen asset to the user’s destination. When that destination is an exchange account, the service needs both the destination address and the exact memo or tag supplied by the exchange.
For a user, support means the service provides a dedicated field for the memo or tag on the selected network and carries it through to the payout. A service that accepts only an address may still work for a personal wallet, but it may not be suitable for a shared exchange address that requires extra routing data.
- Check the exchange’s deposit page for the asset and network you selected.
- Copy the destination address and memo or tag as separate values where the service asks for them.
- Confirm the payout network matches the deposit network; the same asset can exist on multiple chains.
- Review the final quote or order details for the destination and memo before sending XMR.
Do not paste a memo into an address field unless the exchange explicitly provides a combined address format. XRP Ledger supports X-addresses that can encode a destination tag with an address, but other chains and services may expect separate inputs. A missing or incorrect identifier can leave a deposit uncredited and require the exchange to investigate it.
What should users verify before sending XMR?
Check that the swap flow supports the exact output asset and network, then verify how it handles the exchange’s required identifier. The key distinction is whether the service forwards that value in the blockchain payout, rather than merely storing it as an order note.
Memo support adds a step, but it does not change the basic conversion: XMR funds the swap, and the destination chain governs the payout fields. If the service does not expose the required memo or tag, use a destination that accepts ordinary address-only transfers or choose a flow that explicitly supports the exchange’s deposit instructions.
